Tesso Nilo National Park Authority Investigates Death of Elephant Calf
A young Sumatran elephant from the wild population was discovered dead in Tesso Nilo National Park, specifically in the Lancang Kuning Resort, Sector I Regional Division, on Thursday 26 February at approximately 12:00 WIB.
Heru Sutmantoro, head of the Tesso Nilo National Park Authority, revealed that the animal was found in a state of advanced decomposition. Based on physical conditions observed in the field, the death is estimated to have occurred more than a week before discovery.
“Initial examination at the location indicates preliminary findings suggest death resulted from an infection in the leg area, which is strongly suspected to be related to a snare,” said Heru in his statement on Saturday 28 February.
The medical team at Tesso Nilo National Park Authority promptly conducted further treatment, including in-depth examination to determine the cause of death scientifically.
Identification and investigation processes are currently ongoing. Tesso Nilo National Park Authority is committed to handling the matter professionally and coordinating with relevant parties to support Sumatran elephant protection efforts in the conservation area.
This incident serves as a reminder of the very real threats facing wildlife, particularly Sumatran elephants, in their natural habitat. The authority is calling on all stakeholders to increase awareness and actively participate in preserving this protected species.
The authority has pledged to intensify investigation and conservation measures to protect the remaining Sumatran elephant population whilst maintaining the integrity of their natural habitats.
