Tesla has renamed its driver assistance software in China from Full Self-Driving (FSD) to Tesla Assisted Driving, according to Arena EV’s report based on the company’s official Chinese website.

Arena EV reported on Sunday (24 May) that the name change is part of Tesla’s effort to comply with China’s stringent regulations on autonomous vehicle claims.

Tesla has long faced criticism for overstating its software capabilities while failing to deliver true autonomous driving.

Unlike overseas markets where manufacturers now offer only monthly subscription models, Chinese customers can still purchase the software outright.

Chinese consumers can currently buy the full Tesla Assisted Driving package for RMB 64,000 (approximately £7,100).

The company stated the package includes all available basic and advanced features.

The company’s official website description promises future updates will enable vehicles to handle most complex driving tasks with minimal human input.

Labelling Level 2 systems as “Full Self-Driving” has caused significant confusion among early Tesla electric vehicle users.

Chinese regulators maintain strict and uncompromising oversight of vehicle safety and company marketing claims.

Tesla initially changed its software label from “FSD Intelligent Assisted Driving” to “Intelligent Assisted Driving” earlier last year, and has now renamed it again to “Tesla Assisted Driving”.

Removing “Intelligent” and adding “Tesla” indicates the US carmaker is still seeking a safe middle ground with local authorities.

Tesla faces stiff competition from Chinese automakers such as Huawei, XPeng, and Xiaomi, which now offer advanced driver assistance as standard features on their electric vehicles.

The challenges faced by the company have impacted Tesla’s sales in China, with retail sales of the Model Y reportedly declining by 15.05% between January and April 2026.
