Tensions Rise on Pakistan-Afghanistan Border as Taliban Prepares Retaliation
Tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan have escalated sharply following cross-border attacks that occurred on Friday, 27 February 2026. Taliban forces have been observed loading rocket launchers onto military vehicles in response to Pakistani bombing raids against several Taliban government targets in major Afghan cities the previous evening, according to officials from both nations.
Pakistan’s Defence Minister has characterised the escalation as “open war”, marking a significant deterioration in relations between Islamabad and the Taliban government in Kabul. This statement underscores growing concerns about the potential widening of the conflict in the border region, which has long been prone to tensions.
In Balochistan Province, Pakistani police forces are maintaining heightened security near the border with Afghanistan. The increased security measures are being implemented to anticipate potential retaliatory strikes and cross-border movement amid the increasingly volatile situation.
According to Pakistani security sources, the strikes involved air-to-ground missiles targeting Taliban government offices and military positions in Kabul, Kandahar, and Paktia. Additionally, ground clashes have been reported across several sectors along the shared border between the two predominantly Muslim nations.
The Taliban has confirmed that it has launched what it describes as retaliatory attacks against Pakistani military installations. They have accused Islamabad of triggering the escalation by attacking Afghan territory first.
Both sides claim to have inflicted significant damage on the other, though they have released vastly differing casualty and damage figures. To date, these reports have not been independently verified by Reuters, whilst the situation along the border remains tense.
