Tenaga to build turbines

KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): Malaysia's national power firm Tenaga
Nasional Bhd will invest 1.77 billion ringgit (US$708 million) to
build two 500 megawatt steam turbines, a report said
yesterday.

Tenaga executive chairman Ahmad Tajuddin Ali said the turbines
will be built at the Kapar power station in Klang, in central
Selangor state, to meet the country's energy's needs presently
growing at 13 percent annually.

The turbines will be built by a consortium of six contractors
and are designed to have minimal environmental impact, Tajuddin
said. He did not identify the six contractors.

The first turbine would be completed by October next year
while the second would be operational by April 1999, he added.
The Kapar power station presently operates four 300 megawatt
steam turbines and eight gas turbines.
