Jakarta – The Indonesian National Police (Polri) are preparing ten functional toll roads to help alleviate vehicle congestion during Lebaran 2026’s mudik period. The Director of Law Enforcement (Dirgakum) at Korps Lalu Lintas Polri (Korlantas Polri), Brigadier General Faizal, explained that this step was prepared in response to predictions of a surge in public movement across four waves of mudik and balik (going and returning). Faizal said the functional toll roads are expected to channel vehicles away from the main routes which have long been bottlenecks. ‘These functional toll roads will greatly help channel traffic and reduce the burden on the main routes,’ he said at the Democracy Dialectics event at the Parliament Complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Thursday, 5 March 2026. He explained that the two most strategic segments are the South Java Toll Road segment Cipeuyeum–Cisokan, which is 100 percent ready, and the functional toll road toward Sukabumi to ease congestion around Pasar Cibadak. According to Faizal, police predict the peak mudik movement will occur in two waves, on 14–15 March and 18–19 March. Meanwhile, the return flow is expected to peak on 24–25 March and 28–29 March. ‘Based on these predictions, we, together with other stakeholders, have prepared personnel and post placements carefully,’ he said. In addition to setting up alternative routes, Polri has mapped five high-density locations during the mudik period. These points include toll roads and rest areas, national arterial roads, ferry ports, stations and airports, and tourist areas. Faizal noted that rest areas along the toll road are among the points that most often slow traffic. Therefore, the police are deploying a digital system to monitor vehicle movement in real time. ‘We have prepared a digital system that monitors the number of vehicles entering and leaving in real time. Parking availability information will be disseminated via radio, social media, and field officers so the public can know current conditions,’ he explained. Separately, Polri will also station inspection posts at several strategic points to monitor vehicle and driver conditions, to prevent fatigue-related accidents on long journeys. ‘We are working with transport authorities and health authorities. If a driver is found to be fatigued, we will require them to rest for safety,’ he stressed.
