The Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics (BMKG) has indicated the possibility of a prolonged dry season beginning in April, with some areas experiencing below-normal conditions. This means the dry period could last longer and potentially result in drought as well as land and forest fires (karhutla).

Temanggung (ANTARA) - The Temanggung Regency Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) in Central Java is increasing its preparedness to face the potential prolonged dry season expected to start in April 2026, along with risks of drought and land and forest fires (karhutla).

The Acting Head of the Temanggung Regency BPBD, Totok Nursetyanto, in Temanggung on Friday, stated that the prediction of a prolonged dry season this year is based on the latest release from the Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics (BMKG) in its February 2026 bulletin.

“BMKG has indicated the possibility of a prolonged dry season starting in April, with some areas experiencing below-normal conditions. This means the dry period could last longer and potentially result in drought as well as karhutla,” he said.

“Equipment has already been distributed to several points. So, when needed, it can be used immediately without waiting for distribution from the centre,” he added.

In addition, the Temanggung BPBD is preparing a circular letter for village governments as an initial mitigation step. However, the letter is awaiting official guidance from the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) and the provincial government to avoid causing panic among the public.

Regarding drought handling, the agency currently has an allocation for distributing clean water using around 50 tankers.

He urged the public not to panic but to remain vigilant by using water wisely and protecting existing water sources.

“The public should simply use water well and collectively care for the environment, especially water springs. That is the most important thing,” he said.
