PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia (Telkom), the country's largest telecom firm, signed agreements Tuesday with nine foreign operators to expand its international traffic communications volume.
"The signing of the agreements is part of our effort to expand our international traffic communication volume and placements of our points of operation," Sarwoto, Telkom's head of Infratel division, said in Jimbaran, Bali, on Tuesday.
The cooperation allows each of the companies involved in the agreement to connect their point communication operations under one network.
The nine companies are Singapore's Asiakomnet, Inacces, Shine Town, Starhub and Sunvone; South Korea's Telecom; Taiwan Fixed Network, Telecom Italy Sparkle and Hong Kong-based Hutchison Global Communications.
The signing was conducted Tuesday on the sidelines of the company's initial global partnership forum in Bali.
Sarwoto said so far the company had invested US$50 million to expand its international bandwidth capacity.
"Currently our international bandwidth capacity is 8.2 gigabytes per second per month and we expect to increase it by 40 gigabytes per second per month in 2010," he said.
Ravindra Mahalingan from Hutchison Global Communications said he expected the cooperation would be a success as Indonesia's telecommunication market was enjoying a period of growth.
He said communication consumption in Indonesia was still dominated by voice-based communications.
"The ratio of voice communication to Internet in Indonesia is 70 to 30," he said, adding that the ratio would increase to 50:50 within the next five years.
