Telkom prepares CATV network

JAKARTA (JP): The state telecommunications company PT Telkom plans to create a new subsidiary to set up a cable television (CATV) network.

Company president Asman A. Nasution told The Jakarta Post yesterday that the planned company would use the fiber optic networks laid by Telkom in recent years.

Nasution refused to give further details about the CATV plan.

Telkom, with the state-owned international telecommunications carrier Indosat, is also a shareholder in PT Menara Jakarta, a private firm which plans to develop the 550-meter Menara Jakarta tower.

The multi-million-dollar tower, to be erected in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta, is set to become the tallest building and the main multimedia center in Indonesia.

Yayasan TVRI foundation and PT Indocitra Grahabawana, a private firm controlled by Sudwikatmono, Prayogo Pangestu and Henry Pribadi, also have shares in PT Menara Jakarta.

Telkom also has a 35 percent shareholding in PT Telemedia Indonesia which was set up last year as a multimedia company to provide news, videos, audio, home shopping and games on demand. (icn)
