Teacher may get 8 years for murder

JAKARTA (JP): A teacher on trial for killing a police major
burst into tears yesterday when the prosecutor asked the court to
sentence him to eight years imprisonment for the offense.

Public prosecutor Bonar Gultom told the East Jakarta District
Court that the defendant deserved harsh punishment for the
killing.

According to the prosecutor, Baskoni Wahab, 50, is guilty of
killing Maj. Noenang Kohar at about 7:30 p.m on Oct. 14 on Jl.
Wismajaya, East Jakarta.

Maj. Noenang Kohar was chief of the Pademangan police sub-
precinct in Central Jakarta. He was on the way home when the
incident happened.

"The defendant violated article 354 of the Criminal Code and
article two of the Emergency Law number 12, issued in 1955,"
Gultom pointed out.

"The defendant harms other people by carrying a knife
everywhere," he said, urging the court to take that fact into
account.

Judge Toni Hartono presided over yesterday's trial, assisted
by Zulkifli and Lombar Karokaro.

Baskoni Wahab, a teacher at a private school of economics in
Cawang, East Jakarta, cried when he heard the prosecution's
words.

According to the prosecutor, Baskoni shouted "dog" at Noenang
when the major's Daihatsu Taft preceded the bajaj carrying him.
A bajaj is a small three-wheel motorized transport vehicle.

After being called a dog, Noenang tried to stop the bajaj but
Baskoni told the bajaj driver to continue on, Gultom said.
Noenang followed the bajaj and cut off it on Jl. Wismajaya, he
added.

When Noenang reportedly slapped Baskoni, the defendant parried
the slap and then allegedly stabbed the victim in the stomach
with a knife, he said.

The post mortem examination at the Cipto Mangunkusumo hospital
found that Noenang's death was caused by the stab wound, the
prosecutor said.

Judge Toni Hartono adjourned the trial until Nov. 22 to hear
Baskoni's defense. (29)
