Tax monitoring by the president
Tax monitoring by the president
From Koran Tempo
In the United States, an act enabling legislators to get
access to the personal files of taxpayers caused a furor some
time ago. It was feared that the access would be exploited by
politicians.
Now the Indonesian government is about to adopt a policy
allowing the president to supposedly directly monitor officials'
tax receipts on a daily basis. But there is no information about
what data will be presented to the president. Can it be assumed
that major taxpayers are already accessed daily by such a system?
It is therefore necessary to openly explain whether the
monitoring involves tax officials or only taxpayers and suspected
tax evaders?
If it later turns out that these cases are settled
"politically" rather than by legal action, won't this upset
investors?
Proper scrutiny of the "sensitive" activities of the
Directorate General of Taxation is needed to make these officials
aware of the importance of being transparent and to restrict
their power when necessary.
