A consortium comprising Tata Power, Origin Energy and Supraco Indonesia has won the bid for the Sorik Marapi geothermal project in Northern Sumatra, Indonesia.
The Sorik Marapi project will include the development of about 240MW of geothermal generation capacity.
The project will be developed by Sorik Marapi Geothermal Power (SMGP), a special purpose vehicle formed by the consortium.
The consortium would undertake a detailed exploration programme over the next 18 months and begin commercial operations in June 2015.
Indonesia is situated on the Pacific ‘Ring of Fire’ and is expected to have about 27,000MW of potential conventional geothermal resources – the largest in the world.
Currently, Indonesia has 1,196MW in geothermal generation in operation.
