Targeting Millennials and Gen Z, BSI Launches Umrah Savings Account Starting from IDR 100,000
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – The trend of performing Umrah among young people is growing stronger. Amidst the long queues for Hajj and the increasing popularity of halal lifestyles, PT Bank Syariah Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (BSI) has launched the Umrah Savings account to meet the need for more structured pilgrimage planning. Company data shows that the number of Indonesian Umrah pilgrims in 2025 will exceed two million, representing a 36 per cent annual increase. This growth is no longer dominated by older generations. Millennials and Gen Z are starting to plan their spiritual journeys earlier, as financial literacy and religious tourism trends increase. BSI’s Director of Sales and Distribution, Anton Sukarna, said that the changing profile of pilgrims is a signal for the Islamic banking industry to delve deeper into the halal ecosystem. “The halal lifestyle is now a way of life, including Umrah and religious tourism. This presents an opportunity for banks to facilitate or bridge the desire for pilgrimage with sound and secure financial planning,” he said in Jakarta on Monday evening (23 February 2026). The Umrah Savings account is designed as a comprehensive solution, from saving, purchasing travel packages, to making transactions while in the Holy Land using a special debit card. The initial deposit is IDR 100,000 and there are no monthly administration fees. For the public, this scheme is considered to provide space for prospective pilgrims who have limited funds to still be able to plan their Umrah gradually. The concept of a single account for all travel needs is also expected to simplify the management of pilgrimage funds. BSI has partnered with approximately 3,000 travel companies. This collaboration not only targets individual customers but also strengthens the business ecosystem of Hajj and Umrah, including cash management services for travel agencies. The purchase of Umrah packages is also integrated through the BYOND by BSI application, so customers can choose curated packages and pay flexibly.
