Commuter rail services on the Tangerang–Jakarta route were disrupted following an incident in which a Soekarno-Hatta Airport train struck a lorry at the JPL 21 level crossing on the Rawa Buaya–Batuceper section at approximately 06:05 Western Indonesian Time on Friday (20 February).

The collision caused the airport train to derail at a point not far from Poris Station, Batuceper District, Tangerang City, Banten. Photographs circulating on social media showed the airport train carriages off the rails.

The incident temporarily halted and disrupted services on the Duri–Tangerang line.

According to local residents, the incident began when the airport train struck a lorry positioned on the tracks as it was passing through the Poris–Batuceper section.

KAI personnel immediately responded to handle the situation and secure the area. As of 06:32 WIB, the line was still undergoing inspection to ensure safe passage.

“There has been an operational disruption to Train 806A Commuterline Bandara between Poris and Batu Ceper stations as a result of striking a lorry, and the matter is being handled by personnel. Train services will temporarily await confirmation of safe conditions before resuming,” read an official KAI statement via the @CommuterLine account on X.

As a consequence, PT KAI implemented emergency rerouting for a number of commuter rail services. Electric commuter trains on the Duri–Tangerang route were terminated at Rawa Buaya Station and returned towards Duri.

Meanwhile, departures from Tangerang Station were temporarily cancelled. Soekarno-Hatta Airport train services were also suspended until evacuation and track clearance operations were completed.

The following service rerouting measures were put in place:

Train 1912A (Duri–Tangerang) terminated at Rawa Buaya, returning as Train 1921A (Rawa Buaya–Duri).

Train 1914A (Duri–Tangerang) terminated at Rawa Buaya, returning as Train 1923A (Rawa Buaya–Duri).

Train 1922A (Duri–Tangerang) terminated at Rawa Buaya, returning as Train 1931A (Rawa Buaya–Duri).

Train 1924A (Duri–Tangerang) terminated at Rawa Buaya, returning as Train 1933A (Rawa Buaya–Duri).

Train 803A (Soetta–Duri) terminated at Batu Ceper, returning as Train 818A (Batu Ceper–Soetta).

Train 819A (Soetta–Duri) terminated at Batu Ceper, returning as Train 834A (Batu Ceper–Soetta).

Several services were cancelled outright, including PLB 810A, 811A, 804A, 817A, 820A, and 833A.

KAI Commuter Vice President of Corporate Secretary Karina Amanda stated that the company was focused on evacuating all passengers aboard Commuterline Soetta service number 806 bound for Soekarno-Hatta Airport, as well as crew members.

“There were no casualties in this incident; everyone is safe and has been evacuated,” she said in a written statement.

Karina explained that at the time of her statement, relevant personnel had commenced the process of evacuating the train carriages to expedite the handling of the situation.

She added that KAI Commuter was coordinating with KAI Regional Operations 1 Jakarta by dispatching a rescue train to the scene.

Karina noted that as a result of the incident, commuter rail services on the Tangerang route were only serving up to Rawa Buaya Station, whilst airport train services were only operating as far as Batuceper Station.

“As a result of the incident, Tangerang Commuter Line services are currently only operating up to Rawa Buaya Station before returning to Duri Station. Meanwhile, Commuterline Soetta services from the airport direction are only running as far as Batuceper Station before returning to Soekarno-Hatta Airport,” said Karina.

In the interim, she continued, prospective passengers of the airport train or Commuterline Soetta wishing to travel to the airport were advised to seek alternative transport options.

“Commuterline Soetta passengers who have already purchased tickets may obtain a full 100 per cent refund at Commuterline Soetta stopping stations,” she said.
