Takbiran Potentially Coinciding with Nyepi, Bali FKUB Issues Joint Appeal

Bali’s Forum Kerukunan Umat Beragama (FKUB—Inter-Faith Forum) has issued a joint appeal ahead of the observance of Nyepi (Hindu New Year) and Eid al-Fitr 1447, as these two major religious celebrations are expected to occur in close proximity.

Hindu Nyepi is scheduled for 19 March 2026, whilst Eid al-Fitr 1447 potentially falls the following day.

The Chairman of Bali’s Islamic Council (Majelis Ulama), KH Mahrusun Hadyono, confirmed the appeal exists. “For Muslims, in essence takbiran is permitted, but there are specific regulations,” he stated on Saturday, 28 February 2026.

These regulations stipulate that takbiran may only be conducted at the nearest mosque or prayer hall to residents. Participants must walk to their place of worship.

Takbiran must be performed without loudspeakers, without fireworks, firecrackers, or other noise-making devices, and with minimal lighting.

“It can be conducted from 18:00 WITA until 21:00 WITA,” he noted during the Bali Islamic Council’s Regional Coordination Meeting in Denpasar.

Security and order during takbiran celebrations remain the responsibility of individual mosque and prayer hall administrators, who must coordinate with local security authorities.

Beyond takbiran arrangements, the FKUB appeal—consistent with previous years—requires all land, sea, and air transport providers to cease operations during the Catur Brata Penyepian (Nyepi observance period).

This ban runs from Thursday, 19 March 2026 at 06:00 WITA until Friday, 20 March 2026 at 06:00 WITA.

Additionally, radio and television broadcasters are prohibited from transmitting during Nyepi. Mobile telecommunications providers must deactivate mobile data services, and all television service providers must cease distribution during the Nyepi period as specified, whilst maintaining emergency communication services.

The FKUB also stipulates that all residents and tourists are prohibited from travelling or leaving their homes, setting off fireworks or firecrackers, using loudspeakers or noise-making devices, excessive lighting, or engaging in any other activities that may disturb the sanctity of Nyepi or public order.

Business operators in accommodation, entertainment, and tourism destination management in Bali are prohibited from promoting their activities using branding or commercial activities bearing Nyepi’s name.

The FKUB appeal is signed by Ida Pengelingsir Agung Putra Sukahet, Chairman of Bali’s Inter-Faith Forum; Dr. H. Gusti Made Sunartha, Head of the Bali Regional Office of the Ministry of Religious Affairs; Inspector General Daniel Adityajaya, Chief of the Bali Regional Police; Brigadier General Ida I Dewa Agung Hadisaputra, Commander of Military Region 163/Wira Satya; and Governor Wayan Koster.
