Tensions in the Middle East have intensified after Syria was reported to have deployed thousands of military personnel and rocket-launch units to the border with Lebanon, amid renewed clashes between Israel and Hizbollah. Eight security officials from Syria and Lebanon told Reuters on Tuesday (3 March) that the deployment includes infantry units, armoured vehicles, and short-range rocket launchers such as Grad and Katyusha, with troops concentrated in the rural western Homs region and southern Tartus.

Senior Syrian officers said the operation began last February, but its pace has quickened in recent days. Damascus says the mobilisation is purely defensive, and that Syria does not intend to take military action against any neighbouring country. “Syria does not have a plan for military action against any neighbor. However, we are ready to confront any security threat to the sovereignty of the state or our partners,” said one security official.

Beyond national defence, sources say the deployment of the 52nd and 84th Divisions is aimed at disrupting weapon and drug smuggling routes, and to prevent Hizbollah or other militias from infiltrating Syria.

The Damascus-Beirut relationship is historically complex, especially after Syria’s withdrawal from Lebanon in 2005. Damascus is currently trying to balance relations amid domestic fragility following a 14-year civil war. In southern Lebanon, the situation remains tense. Israel continues air strikes forcing tens of thousands of civilians to flee, many heading to the border with Syria seeking protection.

A senior Lebanese security official said the placement of rocket launchers along the eastern border mountains is an anticipatory move by Damascus against possible Hizbollah attacks or provocations that could draw Syria into a broader conflict. (Al Arabiya)
