Swiss National Who Insulted Nyepi Detained in Bali Police Detention Centre
Swiss national Luzian Andrin Zgraggen, suspected of insulting Nyepi Day in Bali, remains in custody at the Bali Police detention centre since being designated a suspect. “For now, we are detaining him at the Bali Police detention centre,” stated the Head of Public Relations for Bali Police, Commissioner Ariasandy, when met at the ITDC Nusa Dua on Tuesday (24/3/2026). Luzian is charged under Article 301 paragraph (1) of Law No. 1 of 2023 on the Criminal Code (KUHP). This article regulates the dissemination of content containing elements of insult through information technology means. Investigators have confirmed that these elements are fulfilled. “We have followed up on the report and designated him as a suspect,” he explained. Additionally, Luzian is accused of violating Article 300 letter b of the KUHP, which addresses hate speech or incitement of enmity against groups or communities based on religion or beliefs in Indonesia. The case originated from a patrol by the Bali Police Cyber Team, which discovered a post on the Instagram account @luzzysun related to Nyepi Day. In the post, the Swiss citizen wrote a sentence with a rude tone. Luzian’s post then went viral on social media and provoked anger among Bali’s Hindu community. The post contained complaints about rules prohibiting people from going outside during Nyepi. He also stated that he did not care about those rules. “A day of silence where you’re not allowed to go outside in Bali is pretty peaceful outside :), f**k Nyepi day and f*ck your rules too,” Luzian wrote in his Instagram story. The Bali Police Subdirectorate III Cyber Distress team, upon learning of this, obtained the identity of the account owner and tracked Luzian’s whereabouts.
