Swift Response from 110 Service Saves Resident on Ampera Bridge
The South Sumatra Regional Police’s 110 Police Service has once again proven its broader role within the community. It is not merely an emergency call centre for accidents or criminality; this service has become a space for humanitarian assistance for residents who are losing hope.
This was evident on Wednesday afternoon (18/3), when the sincerity of the officers in listening to a resident’s grievances and their swift response successfully prevented a tragedy on the Ampera Bridge. The incident began around 17:21 WIB. An operator at the South Sumatra Regional Police Command Centre received a call on the 110 line from a woman with the initials YS (33).
At that time, YS was not reporting a crime but rather expressing the burden on her mind. She recounted feelings of depression and trauma from a dark past, as well as relationship problems that left her confused.
Instead of disconnecting the call because it was not a criminal report, the personnel from Regu III Command Centre of the South Sumatra Regional Police chose to be fully present as listeners. The officers responded to her complaints with patience and full empathy.
However, the situation turned urgent when it was discovered that YS was already at the edge of the Ampera Bridge with the intention of ending her life.
Facing a situation involving a life at stake, the Command Centre personnel acted swiftly, calmly, and measuredly. While continuing to engage YS in heartfelt conversation so she did not feel alone, the other operator team quickly monitored the surveillance cameras (CCTV).
YS’s position was finally identified on the right side of the bridge towards Jakabaring. This visual information was immediately coordinated discreetly to the Pamapta 00 officers from Palembang Police Headquarters who were on standby.
Thanks to the accurate guidance from the Command Centre, the on-site officers arrived at the location quickly without causing panic. Through a gentle and humane persuasive approach, the officers succeeded in persuading YS to step back from the bridge’s edge and abandon her intention.
YS was then evacuated to the Ketupat Operations Service Post in front of the Fountain Roundabout at the Grand Mosque to be calmed. After her condition stabilised and she received moral support, she was escorted back to reunite with her family in a safe state.
The swift response that afternoon serves as a real reflection that the South Sumatra Regional Police’s 110 Service is always present for the community. This event reaffirms the Indonesian National Police’s commitment not only to enforcing the law but also to serving, protecting, and embracing the community at their lowest points.
