Suwung Landfill Reopens Through June, Denpasar City Government Says in Line with Minister's Directive
Waste disposal at Suwung Final Disposal Facility (TPA) in Denpasar resumed normally on Monday morning, 2 March 2026. Previously, Bali Province closed Suwung on Sunday, 1 March 2026, following the Ministry of Environment and Forestry’s policy to halt open dumping in Bali.
Deputy Mayor I Kadek Agus Arya Wibawa said the extension for disposing residue at Suwung until June 2026 is in line with the directive from the Minister of Environment and Forestry, Hanif Faisol Nurofiq.
‘Our readiness is actually until the end of June. From the minister’s directive, we are still given space to dispose of residue until June, but beyond that we have not yet planned,’ Arya Wibawa told reporters after the Kasanga Festival 2026 press conference at Graha Yowana Suci, Wednesday, 4 March 2026.
Arya Wibawa emphasised that the Denpasar City Government would keep maximising waste-management preparations until the end of March 2026. The current focus is on direct guidance to households through the distribution of composter bags.
‘If I’m not mistaken 176 households, but we have provided almost 190 composter bags. Our target is for Denpasar households to have these bags so that organic waste from Denpasar households does not leave,’ he said.
Additionally, the Denpasar City Government is optimising the provision and assembly of machinery. Completion is expected by June.
Arya Wibawa noted a meeting with Hanif Faisol together with Badung Regency on Thursday, 5 March 2026, to ensure each area’s readiness in waste-management.
‘We will hold a meeting to finalise what we have done. If there is any information not yet reaching the ministry, we will relay it tomorrow,’ he said.
According to Arya Wibawa, Hanif Faisol would join a beach-cleaning event on Jimbaran Beach, Badung. The PAN party politician is likely to visit several sites in Denpasar, including Tahura and Kesiman, to observe progress, noting Denpasar comprises 43 desa/kelurahan.
Separately, the Denpasar City Government is also ready to implement the Waste-to-Energy Plant (PSEL). The project is being processed by the Danantara Indonesia Investment Management Agency.
‘PSEL falls under the authority of the Coordinating Minister for Food Security (Menko Pangan) and Danantara; Danantara has been progressing. If I am not mistaken, ground-breaking is planned this March. That’s information from the central government we have received,’ he added.
