Suwandi, Hendri into quarterfinals
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesian men's tennis players Suwandi and Hendri Susilo Pramono reached the men's singles quarterfinals of the Extra Joss Future-4 at Kemayoran Tennis Center here.
Suwandi had to work hard before overcoming Frenchman Gabriel Ledru 7-5, 6-3 in more than one hour in the tournament's second round Wednesday.
Suwandi, the gold medalist in the men's singles event in the 2000 National Games in Surabaya last month, will face Lee Seung- hun of South Korea on Thursday. Lee defeated Daniel Willman of New Zealand 4-6, 6-0, 6-3.
Hendri managed to eliminate South Korean Chung Hee-seok in a rubber set 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 and will challenge Marian Leysek of Slovakia, who overcame seeded eight Yasufumi Yamamoto of Japan 6- 3, 1-6, 6-4.
Unfortunately, old hand Dede Suhendar Dinata had to bow out to seventh seeded Leigh Holland of Australia 1-6, 6-7 (3-7).
Top seed Danai Udomchoke of Thailand, last week's champion of Future-3, was too powerful for Tetsuya Chaen. Udomchoke barely sweated it out to beat the Japanese 6-3, 6-0.
Udomchoke will meet Holland for a semifinal berth.
In another quarterfinals match, Rik De Voest of South Africa will play South Korean Park Seung-kyu. De Voest outclassed another South Korean Kim Dong-hyun 6-3, 1-6, 7-5 while Park overcame seeded three Luben Pampoulov of Austria 6-4, 6-3.
Indonesia, however, booked one berth in the men's doubles final after two Indonesian pairs managed to make their way to the semifinals. Another pair will be decided on the second-day of the quarterfinals Thursday.
Indonesian old partnership of Bonit Wiryawan and Sulistyo Wibowo, winners of the Future-3, will meet last series' finalist Febi Widhiyanto and Hendri on Friday.
Bonit and Sulistyo had no difficulty eliminating Japanese duo Chaen and Akira Matsushita 6-4, 6-3 while Febi and Hendri had to work hard to defeat Udomchoke and Ekkarin Pisuth Arnont of Thailand 7-6 (7-4), 7-5.
In the quarterfinals on Thursday, Indonesian Yusmawan Fahmi and Edo Bawono will play Marcel Du Coudray of Mauritius and Willem Peter Meyer of South Africa. Another match will see seeded five Alan Mackin of England and Pampoulov will face Mustafa Ghouse and Manoj Mahadevan of India. (ivy)
