Sutiyoso nominated by all three parties

JAKARTA (JP): Jakarta Military Commander Maj. Gen. Sutiyoso has been nominated by the three political parties' City Council factions to be Jakarta's governor from 1997 to 2002.

The ruling Golkar, the United Development Party (PPP) and Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI) all put the two-star general at the top of their lists of nominees which were submitted to the City Council yesterday.

While Golkar has only Sutiyoso on its list, the other two parties put two other names on their papers, Deputy Governor of Economic and Development Affairs Tb.M. Rais and City Secretary Harun Al Rasyid.

The factions' candidates will be discussed this month by the City Council before their names are officially proposed to the central government as candidates for Jakarta's next governor.

The nominees, at least three and up to five people, will be considered by the minister of home affairs. The successful candidate will then have to receive the President's approval before officially being installed on Oct. 6.

According to the chairman of the PPP faction, Achmad Suaidy, his faction consulted with their city chapter office before proposing the three candidates.

"We include Rais on our list because the council has not yet officially accepted his refusal to be nominated as reported recently in the media," Suaidy said yesterday.

Before officially submitting the factions' nominees to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the council will ask the candidates if they are willing to be governor.

Rais said in June that he did not want to be elected as the capital's next governor.

The chairman of the Armed Forces faction, Sumekar K.W., said yesterday that his faction would announce its nominees in the next few days but declined to disclose the names. (ste)
