Surge in Mudik Mobility Anticipated This Year, AHY Assures Infrastructure Ready
JAKARTA — The government projects a surge in population mobility during the 2026 Lebaran mudik period. The readiness of infrastructure and transportation facilities remains the primary focus.
Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY), Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, stated that public interest in mudik remains high.
“This year the number of homebound travellers exceeds last year, reaching more than 116,000 travellers to various regions throughout Indonesia with over 200 cities and regencies as destinations. This demonstrates that the mudik spirit remains undiminished,” said AHY in Jakarta on Tuesday (17 March 2026).
“Although the era is increasingly modern and digital, the longing to return to one’s hometown to celebrate Eid al-Fitr remains a hope and joy for Indonesian society,” he added.
A survey by the Ministry of Transportation indicated the potential for population movement to reach 143.9 million journeys during the 2026 Lebaran mudik period.
Approximately 52 per cent of the population is estimated to use private vehicles. Motorcycles represent the next major mode of transport.
“This means we can imagine there will be a surge in population mobility to various regions. Therefore, we must ensure that all facilities and infrastructure are ready,” said AHY.
Major arterial roads connecting cities and regencies also receive primary attention.
“Main road sections, both toll and non-toll highways, as well as arterial routes must be in prime condition to support public travel,” he explained.
