Surah Ash-Shura is the 42nd chapter of the Qur’an, located in juz 25 and comprising 53 verses. As a Makki surah, it holds a strategic place in explaining the foundations of belief and the way of life in Islam. The name ‘Ash-Shura’, meaning ‘Consultation’, is derived from verse 38, emphasising that the affairs of the believers are decided by mutual consensus.

Essentially, Surah Ash-Shura teaches that the revelation sent to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) has the same source as that given to the earlier prophets. Allah emphasises the importance of unity and forbids division.

Some verses in the surah have a specific background of revelation (Asbaab al-Nuzul). The surah covers four main pillars that guide a Muslim’s life:

Verse 11 states, ‘There is nothing whatever like unto Him, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing’ (Laisa kamitslihi syai’un wa huwas-sami’ul bashir). This is the fundamental basis for understanding the unique nature of God, absolutely unlike His creation.

Verse 13 explains that the core tenets of faith (tawhid) taught by Prophet Muhammad are the same as those entrusted to Noah, Abraham, Moses, and Jesus. This shows the continuity of the heavenly message throughout human history.

The surah provides the foundation for the Islamic social order. In verse 38, God praises those whose affairs are decided by mutual consultation, covering aspects from family matters to governance.

Reading Surah Ash-Shura with contemplation yields several virtues for the reader, including: understanding what Ash-Shura means; its Makki origin; and the main message of verse 13 to uphold the religion and avoid division in belief.

What does Ash-Shura mean? Ash-Shura means ‘Consultation’, a quality of the faithful in resolving their affairs. The surah is classified among the Makkiyyah, revealed in Mecca before the Prophet’s migration to Medina. What is the main message of verse 13? The central message is the command to uphold the faith and to avoid division in matters of belief.
