Supremacy of law
must be upheld

From Rakyat Merdeka

The Attorney General need not hesitate about upholding the
supremacy of the law in conjunction with the eradication of
corruption, collusion and nepotism (KKN), particularly in the
case of Buloggate II. There is no reason for Attorney General MA
Rachman to revoke the detention warrant for Akbar Tandjung, even
though the Golkar party has asked him to do so.

The detention of former state secretary and incumbent House
Speaker Akbar Tandjung by the Attorney General's Office is an
interesting phenomenon worth close observation, particularly
within the framework of legal certainty and the realization of
the supremacy of the law.

In this context, the Central Executive Board of the Indonesian
Catholic Students Association (PP PMKRI) considers the detention
of Akbar Tandjung, allegedly involved in the misuse of
nonbudgetary funds, a step forward in the country's law
enforcement process.

This gives us some hope and shows that efforts to uphold the
law and to eradicate KKN form an important part of the total
reform agenda that has now started.

However, people will still have to look at how this case
develops and is put to the test in further legal processing, a
yardstick of the seriousness of the Attorney General to respond
to the hopes and demands of the public concerning enforcement of
the law and the eradication of KKN.

The detention of Akbar Tandjung has also demonstrated that
there is no more discrimination against the country's people
before the law.

The Attorney General's courage to detain Akbar Tandjung should
also be supported by all elements of society so that there is no
distortion of the facts in further legal processing.

Based on the outlook and the thoughts referred to above, PP
PMKRI states its stance as follows:
1. It supports the decision of the Attorney General's Office to
detain Akbar Tandjung, who is allegedly involved in the Buloggate
II case.
2. It demands that the AGO be consistent in carrying out the
process of law enforcement transparently.
3. It urges all strategic political forces in the executive and
legislative agencies, as well as society at large, to exercise
political control.
