Based on official data from the 2025 Intercensal Population Survey released by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Indonesia is now entering an ageing population period with the number of residents aged 60 and above estimated to reach around 34.07 million people, or 12 per cent of the total population. This figure is predicted to continue rising, necessitating the readiness of an appropriate health service and care system that can accommodate the needs of the elderly.

In commemoration of National Elderly Day (HLUN) in May, medical device manufacturer PT Uni-Charm Indonesia Tbk (Unicharm), through its adult diaper brand Lifree, collaborated with the Indonesian National Nurses Association (PPNI) DKI Jakarta to hold a national webinar titled “Towards Zero Decubitus: Comprehensive Nursing Management of Urinary Incontinence and Elderly Skin Health” on Saturday, 30 May 2026.

The webinar featured health experts Dr. dr. Windy Keumala Budianti, Sp.D.V.E, Subsp.D.A.I., FINSDV, FAADV and Ns. Eka Widiati, M.Kep., Sp.Kep.An, ETN, and was attended by more than 1,000 medical personnel to deepen their understanding of proper elderly care.

On the other hand, the quality of life of the elderly in Indonesia is still considered not ideal. One of the causes is the still high incidence of decubitus ulcers (pressure sores). Data from the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia reports that the prevalence rate reaches above 30 per cent. Decubitus ulcers are a social problem because they not only affect the quality of life of the elderly but also impact the psychological and physical burden on families and surrounding caregivers.

Dr. dr. Windy Keumala Budianti, Sp.DVE, Subsp. DAI, FINSDV, FAADV explained that the elderly are at risk of developing pressure sores due to constant pressure on the body from being in one static position for too long, as well as repeated exposure to urine or faeces on the skin, causing moisture, increasing pH, and damaging the skin’s protective function. This moist skin condition makes it more prone to maceration, erosion, irritation, and is highly vulnerable to friction and shear.

Ns. Eka Widiati, M.Kep., Sp.Kep.An, ETN shared five practical steps for nurses and families at home to prevent pressure sores. First, change the elderly person’s body position periodically every two hours to relieve constant pressure on body support points. Second, routinely carry out daily skin inspection. Third, avoid massaging areas that are starting to redden. Fourth, ensure bed sheets are always tidy and dry. Finally, equally important is the accuracy in choosing adult diapers to ensure the skin area is free from stuffiness, remains dry, and is protected from excess moisture.

President Director of Unicharm, Yasutaka Nishioka, stated that the company’s mission is to create a healthy, independent, comfortable, and happy symbiotic Indonesian society through quality absorbent products such as Lifree and other superior products. “This year we are going further by educating more than 1,000 medical personnel through a National Webinar collaboration with PPNI. Through high-quality adult diaper product innovation and continuous education and dissemination of proper elderly handling methods involving experts, we want to make a real contribution to achieving zero pressure sores in Indonesia to maintain a healthy and dignified life for the elderly,” he concluded.
