In the face of increasingly tight global market competition, improving the quality of human resources (HR) in industry has become a priority agenda for the Ministry of Industry. Moreover, the national manufacturing industry sector requires outstanding talent with high technical expertise and strong innovative capacity.

Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita stated that creating competent HR capable of supporting the growth of the national manufacturing industry sector can be achieved through vocational education programmes, which are currently a national priority.

“Vocational education serves as the main foundation to support sustainable growth in the manufacturing sector so that graduates possess competencies aligned with workforce needs, both domestically and in the global market,” said the Minister of Industry in his statement in Jakarta on Tuesday (28/4).

To achieve this goal, the Ministry of Industry organises vocational education under the auspices of the Agency for the Development of Industrial Human Resources (BPSDMI), which includes 11 polytechnics, two community academies, and nine Vocational High Schools (SMK).

As an effort to align industry needs with outstanding HR, the Ministry of Industry is also actively establishing cooperation with various stakeholders, both domestic and international. One such initiative is the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between BPSDMI of the Ministry of Industry and Liuzhou Polytechnic University regarding the development of vocational education and training, research, and community service on Monday (27/4) at Gadjah Mada University.

Liuzhou Polytechnic University is a public higher education institution in Liuzhou, China, under the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China, focusing on the automotive industry, machinery, and next-generation information technology.

Head of BPSDMI Doddy Rahadi stated that in the last five years, the realisation of Chinese investment in strategic industrial sectors such as mineral downstreaming, manufacturing, textiles, and technology in Indonesia has continued to increase, reaching values of tens of billions of US dollars.

According to Doddy, this investment must be accompanied by strong and competent industrial HR readiness, in line with the needs of the business world and industry. Therefore, the education sector must be able to create a real link and match with the industrial sector.

“Collaboration between education and industry between Indonesia and China needs to be continuously expanded. The presence of the China-Indonesia TVET Industry-Education Alliance (CITIEA), which was recently inaugurated, is a very good step and needs to be optimally utilised,” he said.
