Supported by Spare Parts & Accessories, BI Optimistic Retail Sales in May 2026 Will Remain Stable
Bank Indonesia (BI), through its Retail Sales Survey (SPE), forecasts that retail sales performance in May 2026 will remain stable, with a Real Sales Index (IPR) of 225.0. Executive Director of BI’s Communications Department, Ramdan Denny Prakoso, explained that the forecast index contracted by 3.2 percent year-on-year (yoy), a slight improvement from the previous period’s contraction of 3.7 percent (yoy). ‘The May 2026 IPR is supported mainly by an annual increase in sales in the groups of spare parts and accessories, other household equipment, and other goods,’ Ramdan said in his statement on Thursday, 11 June 2026. In detail, the spare parts and accessories group is forecast to grow by 16.6 percent (yoy), other household equipment by 1.8 percent (yoy), and other goods by 0.7 percent (yoy). Meanwhile, other sales groups are still forecast to be in a contraction phase, particularly the food, beverages and tobacco group at -4.0 percent (yoy); motor vehicle fuel at -2.2 percent (yoy); and information and communication equipment at -17.5 percent (yoy). On a monthly basis, retail sales performance is forecast to improve from -11.6 percent month-to-month (mtm) in April 2026 to -0.9 percent (mtm) in May 2026. This improvement was driven by several groups including information and communication equipment and other household equipment, with growth of 2.2 percent (mtm) and 2.0 percent (mtm) respectively, up from previous contractions of -9.4 percent (mtm) and -5.9 percent (mtm). This development was influenced by public demand during the National Religious Holidays of Ascension Day, Eid al-Adha, and Vesak. Regarding the April 2026 realisation, the IPR was recorded at 226.9. This performance was driven by continued annual sales growth in the spare parts and accessories group (up 14.7 percent yoy), other household equipment (up 0.6 percent yoy), and cultural and recreational goods (up 0.7 percent yoy). On a monthly basis, April 2026 retail sales were recorded as contracting by 11.6 percent (mtm), in line with the normalisation of public demand after the Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr 1447 H holidays.
