Sumenep regency needs teachers
SUMENEP, Madura, East Java: The regency needs at least 2,000 new teachers, especially for its schools on remote islands, Regent Soekarno Marsaid said on Thursday.
Soekarno said that in the 30 elementary schools on Raas Island, for instance, many have only three to four teachers, including principals. "This shortage occurs because teachers think that being posted on remote islands means that they are being cast out," Soekarno said.
Around 76 small islands surround the main Madura Island.
"Those who don't want to be posted on the islands shouldn't be teachers in Sumenep," Soekarno told Antara on Thursday.
He said a primary school should ideally have at least nine teachers, including a religions teacher and physical education instructor. (swe)
