Sufmi Dasco Supports 30% Female Representation Quota in Legislative Election
Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR), Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, has expressed support for the Constitutional Court’s ruling imposing sanctions on political parties that fail to meet the female representation quota in legislative elections.
“We support this requirement,” Dasco said at the parliamentary complex in Jakarta on Tuesday, 26 May 2026.
Dasco noted that many women possess the capability and integrity to enter politics, making the 30% minimum quota achievable for political parties.
“We believe there are plenty of qualified women who can reliably fill the female quota for legislative positions at municipal, provincial, and national levels,” he added.
As the acting chairman of the Gerindra Party, he stressed that the court’s ruling is final and binding, reflecting the Indonesian democratic system’s commitment to women’s inclusion.
Furthermore, Dasco said the ruling strengthens the existing 30% female quota in recent elections, with the DPR confirming it will be included in the draft revision of the Election Law.
“The Constitutional Court’s ruling is final and binding, so we will incorporate it into the Election Law revision,” Dasco stated.
Previously, the Constitutional Court ruled that political parties failing to meet the 30% female representation requirement in legislative elections could be disqualified from contesting.
The court also declared that Article 245 of the Election Law, which did not specify sanctions for breaching the quota, conflicted with constitutional principles such as popular sovereignty, fair and honest elections, and legal certainty.
