China is currently launching a major diplomatic manoeuvre to strengthen its influence in Southeast Asia. Beijing is leveraging the ongoing global energy security crisis and trade disruptions as primary entry points.

China’s Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, has begun a series of diplomatic visits to several Southeast Asian countries. Citing an Al Jazeera report on Wednesday (22/04/2026), this step represents Beijing’s latest strategy amid the protracted crisis and rising pressures on global energy security and maritime trade.

On the first day of his visit, Wang Yi is scheduled to visit Cambodia before proceeding to Thailand and Myanmar. The main focus of this series of visits is to deepen bilateral relations with those countries amid the uncertainty of the global economic situation.

Al Jazeera journalist Patrick Fok, reporting from Hong Kong, stated that China is ramping up its diplomatic activities after observing numerous world leaders visiting Beijing in recent weeks. “We have seen a string of world leaders travelling to Beijing in the past few weeks, and Beijing is stepping up its diplomacy,” Fok said.

China has grand ambitions to position itself as a stable alternative partner for Southeast Asian countries. This effort is being pursued deliberately to provide a stark contrast to the role and influence of the United States in the region.

Fok added that Wang’s primary agenda is to strengthen ties with the three key countries targeted in this visit. “Wang Yi will visit Cambodia on the first day, and he will then head to Thailand and then to Myanmar to deepen relations with those countries,” Fok explained.

This massive diplomatic effort comes at a time when Southeast Asian countries are experiencing severe economic pressures. The region is one of the areas hardest hit by energy supply disruptions and trade tariff policies imposed by the Washington government.

According to Fok’s analysis, China’s strategy is to offer itself as a solution amid the tensions between those countries and the West. China wants to present itself as a stable alternative for these nations, distinct from the US.

Furthermore, the countries visited by Yi are also parties severely affected by global energy disruptions. The focus of the visits is not limited to the economic sector but also touches on crucial defence and security alliance aspects.

Fok emphasised that this situation represents a golden opportunity for China to capitalise on the cracks in relations between those countries and the United States. These countries are also among those hardest hit by energy supply disruptions.

“There are also countries hard hit by Washington’s trade tariffs. This is a perfect opportunity, in many ways, for China to exploit it,” Fok stressed.

One important aspect highlighted in the visit to Cambodia is the involvement of defence officials in the talks. This indicates that the alliances being built are not merely about trade cooperation but also encompass regional security pacts.

As a follow-up to these meetings, China is predicted to soon pour massive economic aid into its partner countries in Southeast Asia. Additionally, the expansion of Beijing’s energy projects is expected to increasingly dominate the region in the near future.

“We are likely to see economic support from China to these countries, and we may also see them deepening the expansion of Chinese energy projects in the coming days,” Fok concluded.
