Subway union postpones strike
SEOUL (AFP): The union of Seoul's metropolitan subway system announced here yesterday that they would postpone any strike action to avoid benefiting the ruling camp in the June 27 local elections in South Korea.
The union, representing 8,745 workers out of 10,872 employees, had said on June 15 they were ready to strike tomorrow after failing to resolve a labor dispute with the management.
Union Chairman Suk Chi-soon said the postponement decision was made because the union would prefer to deal after the polls with an elected mayor of Seoul who would be more flexible than the current mayor appointed by the central government.
"In addition, we do not want to adversely affect the election results by strike actions," Suk told journalists.
