Students need field experience: Rector

BOGOR, West Java: A university rector has called on teachers to include fieldwork in the environmental curriculum so students gain hands-on experience.

Ahmad Ansori Mattjik, rector of the Bogor Institute of Agriculture (IPB), said on Sunday teachers must not only tell students to learn theory from books.

Fieldwork can consist of various programs, such as planting trees in protected forests, he said.

He was speaking during an event for the Plant a Tree program, in which about 60 elementary school students were involved.

Ahmad said he hoped the program would help the IPB realize its goal to become an environment-oriented university focusing on "agriculture, ecology, education and tourism". -- Antara
