Students hit by crisis

YOGYAKARTA: Some 4,000 Gadjah Mada University students may
have to take a vacation from their studies because of financial
difficulties, its rector, Ichlasul Amal, said here Wednesday.

Amal was quoted by Antara as saying that 460 students have
already told the university they could not afford to pay their
tuition.

Amal said after receiving scholarships for 15 students from
Kyoto Prefecture, Japan, that the university was trying to help
the students overcome their financial problems. One way was
through scholarships.

The university has given scholarships to 350 students, while
2,000 others have received scholarships from various
institutions, Amal said.

The 15 Gadjah Mada University students receiving the
scholarships from Japan will get Rp 100,000 per month for one
year.
