Student may face eight years in jail for beating

JAKARTA (JP): A university student could face up to eight years in prison if found guilty of beating up another student.

A lawsuit against Rifardi Rifiar, a sixth-year medical student at the University of Indonesia, was submitted at the Central Jakarta District Court on Thursday by prosecutor Lukimanto.

Rifiardi allegedly beat Barlian Rahmat Parulian Sitompul, who is now suffering from numbness in his neck and legs, according to a medical report.

Representing Rifardi is lawyer O.C. Kaligis; the team of judges is headed by judge Iman Purnomo.

Rifardi has since filed a lawsuit at the Jakarta State Administrative Court against the university's rector, who suspended Rifardi for beating Barlian and six other students.

The court hearing was adjourned until next Thursday.(14)
