Strong quake hits Yogyakarta
YOGYAKARTA: An earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale hit Yogyakarta at 12:10 p.m. on Friday, an official of the local Meteorological and Geophysics Agency told The Jakarta Post.
There were no immediate reports of fatalities or damage.
The quake, whose epicenter was some 150 kilometers south of Yogyakarta, lasted for 10 minutes. It could be felt in the nearby towns of Surakarta and Klaten to the east and a number of towns north of Yogyakarta, said Husein of the agency.
Witnesses said the quake caused panic among residents, many of whom were performing Friday prayers in mosques or were in office buildings when the tremor struck. (44)
