JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Batam City Government is optimising Trans Batam bus services by increasing the number of units by 2026. The Directorate General of Land Transportation under the Ministry of Transportation considers this a strategic step towards modern and integrated public transport. Director General of Land Transportation Aan Suhanan stated that developing Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) under the Buy The Service (BTS) scheme is a strategic move to achieve orderly, productive, and sustainable urban mobility. “We have consistently strengthened Trans Batam with a gradual fleet increase since 2024, adding 19 units by 2026,” Aan said in a statement on Wednesday, 27 May 2026. Aan explained that all units will optimise services across five strategic corridors in Batam Centre: Sekupang, Tanjung Uncang, Jodoh, Tanjung Piayu, and Nongsa. “We also commend the implementation of cashless payment systems and intermodal integration of Trans Batam, including connectivity to Hang Nadim Airport,” he added. Strengthening public transport services through BRT development, Aan added, is crucial for supporting efficient citizen mobility. Efficient public transport can reduce the economic burden on citizens caused by high transportation costs and traffic congestion, while also helping to prevent an energy crisis. “Currently, transportation costs consume up to 30-40% of citizens’ income, and the sector absorbs 90% of the Rp 300 trillion annual fuel subsidy. This imbalance leads to various issues, including longer travel times, economic losses from traffic jams, air pollution, and difficulties accessing education and employment,” Aan said. Aan explained that developing AUMP requires integrated planning, central and regional funding cooperation, and strong governance to create a more sustainable, equitable, and efficient transport system.
