JAKARTA - Two vessels owned by PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS), namely Pertamina Pride and Gamsunoro, remain detained in the Persian Gulf. Both have yet to cross the Strait of Hormuz despite preparations to resume their voyage.

This situation stems from Iran’s policy of intermittently opening and closing the Strait of Hormuz over short periods. The shipping route was only open for about 12 hours before being shut again.

Iran temporarily opened the Strait of Hormuz on Friday (17/4/2026). The following day, Saturday (18/4/2026), the route was closed once more.

The government, along with PT Pertamina (Persero), has been working to evacuate the two vessels since the conflict in the Middle East intensified at the end of February 2026. Negotiations with Iran are ongoing.

Pertamina had prepared to operate the very large crude carrier (VLCC) tanker vessels, Pertamina Pride and Gamsunoro, when the strait was declared open.

Acting Corporate Secretary of Pertamina International Shipping, Vega Pita, stated that the company had devised a sailing plan to ensure safety.

“The strategy prepared includes route planning, risk identification, electronic navigation, and contingency planning,” she said in an official statement on Saturday (18/4/2026).

The company is also coordinating with various agencies. Communication has been established with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to support diplomatic channels with local authorities.

Coordination also involves insurance companies, ship management, cargo owners, and port authorities. These steps are being taken to fulfil all permitting procedures.

Developments on the ground have prevented the sailing plan from being implemented. Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz again on Sunday (19/4/2026).

The situation heated up after US President Donald Trump announced he would send an envoy for negotiations. Trump also threatened new strikes if Iran does not meet demands.

Tensions escalated further after reports that the US seized an Iranian cargo ship attempting to breach the blockade. Iran has refused to open new peace talks.

This condition has left Pertamina Pride and Gamsunoro still detained in the Arabian Gulf.

“Both PIS vessels are currently in the Arabian Gulf and have not been able to cross the Strait of Hormuz. PIS continues to closely monitor the highly dynamic situation in the Strait of Hormuz,” Vega said in her statement on Sunday (19/4/2026).

The company continues to coordinate with ministries and relevant authorities. Sailing plans remain prepared while awaiting improved conditions.

“The top priority is the safety of all crew members, the security of the vessels, and their cargo. We hope the situation in the route improves soon and becomes conducive so that Pertamina Pride and Gamsunoro can resume their voyage safely,” she added.
