A storyteller arrived at Kampung Rambutan Terminal in East Jakarta to entertain the children of holiday-bound travellers. The storyteller’s presence was met with enthusiasm from the children.

The storyteller was there to tell stories to children who were waiting for their bus departures heading home for the holidays.

The storytelling activity was led by Budi, a storyteller from the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) team. The storytelling session took place in the terminal’s automated ticket machine area and became one of the activities that captured the attention of families awaiting their bus departures.

Budi invited children at the terminal to gather in front of the activity area before beginning the storytelling session. Before starting the story, Budi encouraged the children to participate in movement games accompanied by songs to lighten the atmosphere.

A number of children in the terminal area stepped forward to participate in the activity. During the storytelling session, Budi presented an interactive story themed around the environment, inviting children to imagine life at the bottom of the sea.

“Who has ever seen the sea? What is in the sea?” Budi asked the children. Various children then mentioned different sea creatures such as fish, sharks and octopuses. Through the storytelling, Budi also encouraged children to understand the importance of maintaining environmental cleanliness, including Indonesia’s seas, from rubbish.

The storyteller also used hand puppets as a medium to convey the story, making it more engaging for the children present.

The children appeared enthusiastic whilst following the story whilst standing in front of the activity area, whilst some parents accompanied them from the waiting chairs in the surrounding area.

This storytelling activity was part of an effort to create a child-friendly space at the terminal during the holiday exodus period.

On Friday (13 March), Kampung Rambutan Terminal was already crowded with holiday travellers. Several prospective passengers were seen making use of the time by resting, chatting with family or using their mobile phones.

They filled the terminal’s waiting area whilst carrying various luggage such as suitcases, backpacks and boxes containing travel necessities.

Some passengers were seated in the waiting chairs whilst waiting for their long-distance bus departure schedules to various areas on the island of Java such as Tasikmalaya, Garut and Central Java regions.
