Steam apologises and reveals cause of inaccurate IGRS rating display
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Steam has expressed an apology for the error in displaying Indonesia Game Rating System (IGRS) ratings on games on its platform, which had previously attracted public scrutiny. Steam explained that a technical error and miscommunication resulted in the displayed ratings being inaccurate and incomplete. “The technical error and miscommunication led to inaccurate and incomplete ratings being temporarily displayed on Steam between 2 April and 5 April,” Steam stated in its official explanation, quoted on Wednesday. Valve, the owner of Steam, has been communicating with the Ministry of Communication and Digital for more than two years to build a system for displaying age ratings for Steam customers in Indonesia. The system aims to use information provided by developers about their games to determine age ratings in accordance with IGRS provisions. However, Steam acknowledges that there are still several preparatory steps before displaying approved IGRS ratings to customers in Indonesia. “We apologise for any confusion that may have been caused by this error,” Steam said. Director of Digital Ecosystem Development at the Ministry of Communication and Digital, Sonny Hendra Sudaryana, stated that his side acknowledges there are games with IGRS ratings that do not match their content. For example, PUBG received a 3+ rating, whereas Upin Ipin Universe is intended for ages 18+. Sonny added that this investigation is being conducted openly and involves various stakeholders such as communities, associations, and game industry players to identify the causes of irregularities in game classification on the Steam platform.
