A statue of Fatmawati Soekarno has become an icon in the newly inaugurated Heritage Flag Park in South Jakarta. The statue depicts Fatmawati whilst pregnant with her son Guntur Soekarnoputra, sewing the Red and White national flag.

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung stated that the statue was deliberately placed in the park as a form of tribute to Fatmawati, who was instrumental in sewing the nation’s heritage flag, the Red and White, during the Independence Proclamation on 17 August 1945.

“By placing the Statue of Mrs. Fatmawati in this Heritage Flag Park area, we wish to honour the figure who made great contributions to the nation and state,” said Pramono during the inauguration of Heritage Flag Park in South Jakarta on Saturday, 14 March 2026.

Pramono acknowledged that he had only recently learnt that the statue was created depicting Fatmawati whilst pregnant. He noted that this information was conveyed directly by the statue’s sculptor.

“The statue was created with Mrs. Fatmawati pregnant with Mas Guntur,” he said.

According to him, Fatmawati played a significant role in Indonesian history by sewing the nation’s heritage Red and White flag, which was first hoisted during the proclamation.

“The Red and White flag is the nation’s identity, our highest national identity, and simultaneously represents the sovereignty of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia,” he explained.

Pramono added that Heritage Flag Park was created as a public space rich in historical value whilst also serving as a green open space for Jakarta residents.

The park is the result of integrating three parks in South Jakarta: Ayodya Park, Leuser Park, and Langsat Park. The area covers approximately 5.6 hectares and features a jogging track spanning 1.2 kilometres, sports fields, and recreational areas.

He expressed hope that the park’s inauguration would become a symbol of Jakarta’s pride whilst reminding the public of Fatmawati’s significant role in national history.

“For this reason, we have made Heritage Flag Park one of Jakarta’s symbols of pride, rich in national values and history,” he said.
