State-Owned Enterprises Prepare Funds to Improve 1,800 Level Crossings
The head of the State-Owned Enterprises Regulatory Body (BP BUMN), Dony Oskaria, stated that state-owned enterprises will close several level crossings in response to the train tragedy at Bekasi Timur Station. Dony said the closure of level crossings is a direct instruction from President Prabowo Subianto.
“Mr President has stated that we will evaluate all railway crossings. We will evaluate this,” Dony said in Jakarta on Tuesday (28/4/2026).
The Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Danantara Indonesia said the government will allocate a budget of Rp 4 trillion to close level crossings. Dony described this step as a serious government commitment to mass transportation.
“It is being calculated, Mr President has stated there will be an additional Rp 4 trillion, but it will be combined with KAI’s budget and state-owned enterprises will also participate in providing safety for all road users, both inside the train and those crossing the level crossings on public roads,” Dony said.
Dony admitted he has instructed KAI to improve two main aspects, namely safety and electrification as key performance indicators (KPI) for the company. Dony said there are 1,800 level crossings that must be addressed to prevent future accidents.
“We realise there are approximately 1,800 crossings that we must improve in quality, but disasters cannot always be avoided. Once again, we apologise. We will immediately conduct a comprehensive evaluation, both of train operations and matters related to safety,” Dony added.
Dony stated that improvements in the railway sector are a government priority. He said the President wants to provide good and affordable mass transportation for all Indonesian people.
“Therefore, this year, specifically on 20 May, we will hold groundbreaking ceremonies for the electrification of Jakarta-Cikampek, Jakarta-Sukabumi, and also Jakarta-Cilegon,” he said.
Dony hopes that railway electrification will create new cities, reduce urbanisation, curb pollution, and increase transportation efficiency in Indonesia. Dony assured that they will conduct a comprehensive evaluation.
“We hope for the support of the Indonesian people; this can be done as quickly as possible and provide peace and comfort for the community passing through railway crossings,” Dony said.
