Staple Goods Prices Fall, Traditional Market Traders in Subang Lament Fewer Customers
Trading activities in several traditional markets in Subang Regency, West Java, have yet to return to normal, even as prices of essential goods have stabilised and even decreased. Entering the second week after the Eid al-Fitr holidays, market conditions remain subdued with few buyers, on Sunday (29/3/2026). Low transaction volumes are influenced by many residents who have not yet returned from their homecoming trips or long holidays. Traders predict that market activity will pick up in the coming days as collective leave periods end and people resume their routines. One trader at Pamanukan Market in Subang, who wished to remain anonymous, complained about the still quiet market conditions. Observations by Media Indonesia at Pamanukan Market and Ciasem Market showed that prices of major commodities and vegetables are relatively stable, with no significant fluctuations. Traders stated that prices of essential goods have returned to normal after rising ahead of Eid. Gandi, a staple goods trader at Pamanukan Market, said that prices of basic foodstuffs had increased before the holiday but are now stabilising, with some commodities even decreasing. “Currently, premium rice is Rp73,000 per 5 kg package, premium cooking oil is Rp22,000 per litre. Chicken eggs are Rp30,000 per kg, down Rp3,000. Meanwhile, vegetables are also starting to decrease in price, except for bird’s eye chillies which remain high at Rp100,000/kg,” said Gandi on Sunday (29/3). Although prices are improving, traditional markets are still not bustling. Traders hope the number of buyers will increase soon as community activities normalise after the long Eid holidays.
