Stable Distribution and Large Capacity: KAI Transports 1,950 Tonnes of Fertiliser in the First Quarter of 2026
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Rail-based logistics performance continues to demonstrate its role in maintaining the distribution of strategic commodities through measured operational patterns. One such movement is reflected in the fertiliser transport services provided by PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) as part of the national distribution system.
From January to March 2026, KAI handled 1,950 tonnes of fertiliser transport. In 2025, the total fertiliser transport reached 21,060 tonnes. Overall, KAI’s total cargo transport in the first quarter of 2026 amounted to 14,948,442 tonnes, indicating a continuously expanding distribution scale.
KAI’s Vice President of Corporate Communication, Anne Purba, stated that fertiliser transport illustrates how the rail logistics system operates on a large scale.
“Our focus is to ensure distribution runs on schedule with adequate capacity. Fertiliser is one example of how railways manage large-volume shipments regularly,” said Anne.
Railways offer advantages in transport capacity and journey consistency. In a single trainset, capacity can reach up to 4,200 tonnes, supported by a maximum of 60 wagons. The current average capacity per wagon is 50 tonnes and is continuously being increased to 70 tonnes.
This performance is supported by operational punctuality. In the first quarter of 2026, the on-time departure rate for cargo transport was recorded at 95.97% and arrivals at 91.77%. These figures provide certainty for businesses in planning distribution.
“Railways maintain a stable distribution rhythm. When schedules are kept, the shipping process can be planned with greater certainty,” Anne continued.
Strengthening rail-based logistics also contributes to national efficiency. Currently, Indonesia’s logistics costs remain in the range of 15% to over 20% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), while the global standard is around 7-8%.
Approximately 60% of national logistics activity is on Java Island, with a value of Rp2,400-2,500 trillion per year. Improvements in distribution in this region have a broad impact on economic movement.
In terms of its utilisation, fertiliser is one commodity that has a direct impact on the agricultural and food sectors. When distribution runs on schedule, planting processes can occur on time, harvests are better maintained, and food supplies to the public remain stable.
“Distribution that runs on schedule provides certainty for many sectors, including agriculture as an example. This is what we continue to maintain through improvements in operational quality,” Anne concluded.
