A female student at Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN) Sultan Syarif Kasim in Riau, Farradila Ayu, became a victim of stabbing by a fellow student whilst awaiting the scheduling of her thesis proposal seminar on Thursday, 26 February 2026. The alleged perpetrator, a fellow student identified as R, reportedly committed the act out of romantic rejection.

Prof Rose Mini Agoes Salim, a distinguished professor of psychology at Universitas Indonesia, characterised this case as reflective of immature adolescent thinking patterns. According to her, during late adolescence transitioning into early adulthood, many individuals lack the capacity to view problems rationally.

“When someone is not thinking rationally, they believe that if they fail to obtain the person they desire or fail at anything whatsoever, it is like the end of everything,” Prof Rose stated when contacted by Republika on Friday, 27 February 2026.

She contended that the issue stems not merely from romantic matters, but rather from deficiencies in life skills when managing problems and conflicts. Adolescents lacking analytical abilities tend to perceive situations narrowly and contemplate only a single course of action.

“When the only solution they can imagine becomes unattainable, the result can manifest as violent behaviour, harming others, or even self-harm,” Prof Rose explained.

To cultivate acceptance of failure or rejection, Prof Rose emphasised the importance of developing life skills. She stressed that every individual requires training in analysing problems clearly, identifying the root causes of issues, and identifying multiple alternative solutions.
