S'pore to expand sources of fish

SINGAPORE (AFP): Singapore will expand its sources of fish
with the opening of a new fishing port and a deep-sea farm
project, a newspaper report said yesterday.

Singapore, which gets its imported fish from Malaysia and
Indonesia, will also be looking to China, Myanmar, Bangladesh,
and India as cheap sources of fish, the Straits Times quoted Koo
Tsai Kee, parliamentary secretary for national development, as
saying.

Koo on Saturday opened the Senoko Fishing Port, a 3.24-hectare
port which can handle up to 20 tons of fish each day and
accommodate more vessels and merchants.

The average Singaporean consumes 33 kilograms of fish each
year and at least 99,000 tons annually are needed to feed the
three million population, the report said.
