House Speaker Puan Maharani has responded to controversy surrounding an Alert Level 1 order issued by TNI Commander General Agus Subiyanto. Puan stated that Commission I of the House of Representatives, which partners with the TNI, would examine the commander’s telegram.

“Yes, regarding the Alert Level 1 order, we will request the relevant commission to inquire with the TNI about this matter,” Puan said following a House plenary session at the Nusantara II Building in Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday, 10 March 2026.

Puan supported the TNI’s stance of maintaining constant readiness. However, she requested the TNI provide concrete public explanation following the order’s emergence into public scrutiny.

“Certainly, law enforcement and the TNI should always remain on alert. However, if such an order is issued in the current situation, it may be worth questioning whether it is necessary. It would be better if the TNI provided clear and concrete explanation, which will then be pursued through the relevant commission,” she said.

TNI Commander General Agus Subiyanto had previously issued a telegram order to his units to implement Alert Level 1 in anticipation of developing domestic situations resulting from the impact of conflict in the Middle East region. The TNI described this measure as consistent with the military’s core duties.

The order is contained in TNI Commander Telegram No. TR/283/2026. The letter was signed by TNI Commander Assistant for Operations Lieutenant General Bobby Rinal Makmun on 1 March 2026.

TNI Spokesperson Brigadier General Aulia Dwi Nasrullah explained that the implementation of Alert Level 1 is a TNI responsibility mandated by the TNI Law. He stated that the protection in question relates to threats against the nation and state.

“One of the TNI’s core duties is to protect the entire nation and all of Indonesia’s territory from threats and disturbances to the integrity of the nation and state,” Brigadier General Aulia said when contacted on Sunday, 8 March.
