Spain urges US to halt the destruction in the Middle East
Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has called for ‘loyal cooperation’ with the United States as tensions between the two allies rise over Washington’s strikes against Iran. Speaking alongside the Prime Minister of Portugal Montenegro, Sánchez said the relationship with Washington must be conducted with due respect, in a spirit of loyal cooperation and on the basis of equality. Sánchez again criticised the US and Israel’s strikes against Iran, describing them as a ‘grave mistake’ and saying the attack was not in line with international law. Former President Trump had previously criticised Sánchez’s government, calling Spain a ‘terrifying’ ally and threatening to sever trade ties. Sánchez responded by reaffirming his opposition to war and his refusal to allow the US to use bases in southern Spain to launch attacks on Iran. In a recent post on Truth Social, Trump claimed that the State Department had moved thousands of people from various Middle Eastern countries. The spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry, Esmail Baghaei, accused the US and Israel of carrying out attacks targeting a primary school in Niloufar Square, Tehran. He cited a number of fundamental questions that remained unanswered, such as disarmament mechanisms and who would conduct the operation on the ground. Iranian Press TV reported on Thursday morning that the military targeted anti-Iran separatist forces, without specifying the location of the attack. Past experience shows that every negotiation with the United States ends with a breach of the agreement or even military strikes on Iran. They also reaffirmed their commitment to preventing Iraqi territory from being used as a launchpad for attacks on neighbouring countries. In another Truth Social post, Trump claimed that the State Department had moved thousands of people from different Middle Eastern countries. The Iran conflict led to the cancellation of 64 flights at Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali, with more than 8,000 passengers unable to travel as airspace in the Middle East was temporarily closed. Seoul authorities have issued Level 4 warnings for the entire territory of Iran. The latest developments in the Middle East cannot be read as an ordinary regional escalation.
