Soybean scarcity may fuel inflation in January

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - A soybean scarcity that happened early this year is predicted to fuel inflation in rest of January - something which could affect the government`s annual inflation target of 5 percent with plus or minus one percent.

"This situation has the potential of fueling inflation," the National Development Planning Board`s Macro Planning Director Bambang Prijambodo said here on Tuesday.

He said the government would ensure supply of soybean and other food stuffs in order to prevent the scarcity from having a prolonged impact.

Protecting food supplies was necessary to prevent further inflation, especially because in 2007, the food sector had recorded an inflation rate of up to 12 percent, he said.

According to the Central Bureau of Statistics, the inflation rate in January 2007 was 1.04 percent.(*)
