Weather in a number of areas of Southeast Sulawesi (Sultra) on Thursday has the potential to cause hydrometeorological disasters, including floods, waterlogging, landslides, and fallen trees. The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has requested the public to increase vigilance, particularly in disaster-prone areas.

A forecaster from the Kendari Maritime Meteorology Station stated that extreme weather in the form of moderate to heavy rain, potentially accompanied by thunder and strong winds, is anticipated from midday until the early hours of the morning. During the afternoon and evening, areas that need to be on alert for moderate to heavy rain include Konawe, South Konawe, Kolaka, East Kolaka, Bombana, Buton, and North Buton Regencies. Meanwhile, other areas such as Kendari City, North Konawe, North Kolaka, West Muna, Baubau, Central Buton, and South Buton are forecast to experience light rain.

Entering the nighttime, heavy rain potential is predicted to occur in the Konawe and North Konawe regions. In the early hours, residents in South Konawe, Konawe Islands, and North Buton are advised to be more alert, according to the forecaster. The BMKG had also monitored the growth of light rain clouds during the morning across most of Southeast Sulawesi, including Kendari, Muna, West Muna, and the Wakatobi Islands.

Based on weather parameters, air temperatures in Southeast Sulawesi range from 24 to 32 degrees Celsius. Air humidity is recorded between 60 and 95 per cent, with winds blowing from the northeast towards the southeast at speeds of up to 20 kilometres per hour. The BMKG has urged the public to anticipate the impacts of extreme weather, particularly those living on slopes, riverbanks, low-lying areas, and regions with many large trees. Residents are also asked to be cautious when outdoors, avoid sheltering under trees during rain accompanied by strong winds, and to monitor official weather information from the BMKG.
