South Sulawesi to get new sea port

MAKASSAR, South Sulawesi: The Takalar regency in South Sulawesi
will start building next year its first sea port serving ferries
and cargo vessels, hoping to tap into the economic potential of
the routes to Makassar, Surabaya in East Java and Brunei
Darussalam.

The port's construction was approved by the central
government, said Takalar regent Ibrahim Rewa on Monday.

Takalar plans to build the Rp 30 billion (about US$3.37
million) to Rp 40 billion port in the South Galasong district.

Located on the southern tip of the province, Galasong is about
20 minutes away from Makassar, South Sulawesi's capital.

Ibrahim said the water at Galasong was deep enough to allow
large vessels to use the port.

Once completed, it could serve shipping routes to eastern
parts of Indonesia, to Surabaya, Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan,
and Brunei. -- Antara
