South Korean Investors Target Fisheries to Tourism Sectors in North Maluku
South Korea, through the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Indonesia in Jakarta, YM Yoon Soon Gu, held a meeting with the Governor of North Maluku, Sherly Tjoanda Laos, at the Office of the Republic of Korea Embassy on Friday, 17 April 2026. The meeting discussed the development of strategic cooperation in the fields of mining, energy, fisheries, and tourism. According to the North Maluku Provincial Government, all cooperation agendas will be directed towards the principles of sustainable development, value addition, and community welfare. The meeting also addressed the investment by South Korean company POSCO in Weda, which is currently developing a nickel processing industry through a joint venture scheme in the IWIP area. According to Sherly, the presence of this foreign investment is important for promoting the downstreaming of natural resources in North Maluku. “The North Maluku Provincial Government is committed to maintaining a healthy, transparent, and accountable investment climate. This commitment includes certainty of business permits, environmental protection, and fulfilment of corporate responsibilities to the community and region in accordance with applicable regulations,” she said. Sherly stated that the North Maluku Provincial Government is also encouraging healthy and fair partnerships with all investors, including the Republic of Korea, by ensuring all activities run in accordance with regulations and provide optimal benefits for the community and region. The Governor also emphasised that every investment entering North Maluku must have a real impact on regional development, particularly in creating jobs, enhancing human resource capacity, and strengthening the value added of local commodities. “In addition, the importance of synergy between the central government, local government, and business actors to maintain investment stability while ensuring responsible industrial practices, both socially and environmentally,” she added.
